Coughlan, Zimmermann hoping to leave their marks in medical field

By Mark Soltau, Bud Anderson June 11, 2012, 3:07 am

In the Clubhouse this week: Monica Coughlan and Andrew Zimmermann, two incredible scholar-athletes who have benefitted from Buck/Cardinal Club support.

Stanford seniors Coughlan and Zimmermann have excelled in athletics and in the classroom. Coughlan is a member of the 2011 and 2012 NCAA champion women’s water polo teams, while Zimmermann helped the Cardinal men’s basketball team win the 2012 NIT Championship.

After graduation this spring, both hope to attend medical school and have big plans for the future. None of this would be possible without nearly 9,000 donations totaling $8.5 million last year from supporters of the Buck/Cardinal Club, which helps more than 800 student-athletes pursue their dreams.

Coughlan and Zimmermann are two of many scholar-athletes that you support through your donations to the Buck/Cardinal Club.

Brother-sister tandem help spark Stanford Sailing

Seldom do a brother and sister attend the same university at the same time, let alone compete in the same sport. In the case of Kelly and Jack Ortel, they wouldn’t want it any other way.

Kelly, ’14, and Jack, ’15, grew up in Annapolis, Maryland, and are members of nationally-ranked Stanford sailing. Both have been key contributors to the most successful team in school history, Stanford sweeping all six Pacific Coast Sailing Conference titles in Santa Barbara, California, in late April—a league first.

Varsity sailing comprises six divisions: singlehanded one-person sailing for men and women in the fall; match racing, where three people are on the boat; two-person sailing—team—in the spring, which puts your best three boats in the water against an opponent’s, with the lowest score getting a win in round-round format; and coed and women’s sailing, where there is an A and B division.
