'53 team paved way to College World Series

In 1953, the Stanford baseball team earned the school’s first-ever trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Recently, 17 members from that team returned to Klein Field at Sunken Diamond to celebrate their 60-year reunion and were honored before the Cardinal game against Arizona.

“It was a landmark deal for Stanford baseball,” said Bob Murphy, ’53, a former All-America pitcher and long-time radio voice of Cardinal football and basketball games.

Stanford was eliminated by eventual national champion Michigan, but not before paving the way to Omaha for future Cardinal teams. All told, Stanford has made 16 appearances at the College World Series, winning back-to-back national titles in 1988 and 1989.  The Cardinal have reached the title game 5 times, and ... A conversation with Mark Appel, ’13

Q: Last year you explored the opportunity to go pro. Tell us about it.

MA: A lot of people assumed I was disappointed when I didn’t get selected as the overall #1 draft pick, but being selected as the eighth pick in the MLB First Year Player Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates was one of the greatest honors I could have ever received. I was in a no-lose situation. I could sign with the Pirates or return to Stanford for my senior season, and I knew that going into the draft.

Q: Why did you turn down the Pirates and return to Stanford for your senior year?

MA: It was after much thought that I knew Stanford was the best place for me to be during the 2013 season—for a number of reasons—and I am very excited to be back!

Women in Sports Reception celebrates donors, success of scholar-athletes

The 8th Annual Buck/Cardinal Club Women in Sports Reception was held last week at the Bechtel Conference Center at Encina Hall on the Stanford University campus. An enthusiastic crowd of more than 150 attendees including coaches, current and former scholar-athletes, donors, and invited guests gathered to help celebrate the growth and success of women’s sports.

Following refreshments and a silent auction, Liz Muir and Bernard Muir, the Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics, spoke to the audience about the importance of women’s sports and thanked trailblazers like Linda Meier, ’61, for creating the Cardinal Club (a precursor to the current Buck/Cardinal Club) in 1978, which has provided scholarship aid and program support for women’s teams at Stanford.
